1881 Schoolhouse and Grandma’s Place Student Programs - CORRECTION 8 Apr 2025
Important update regarding previous announcement
Archives and Museum has become aware that most Grade 4 teachers will be following the “old” social studies curriculum for the 2025–26 school year.
As a result, in addition to Grade 3, we are extending a final year for Grade 4 classes to attend the 1881 Schoolhouse and Grandma’s Place field trips.
To ensure fairness, due to oversubscribed field trips, schools will only be able to bring either Grade 3 classes or Grade 4 classes, not both.
We appreciate your understanding as we plan for next year's field trips
We've encountered a situation where opening bookings to both Grade 3 and Grade 4 classes has wonderfully increased the number of interested groups! However, our capacity to offer field trip slots remains the same. To ensure fairness and provide opportunities for a wider range of schools across the Division, we've had to make the challenging decision to limit our field trips to one grade level per school.
We recognize this adjustment might be disappointing for some teachers and we want to assure you that this decision was made with the entire Division in mind. It helps prevent schools with a larger number of classes from potentially filling most of the available spaces, allowing more schools the chance to participate in our field trips.
1881 Schoolhouse and Grandma’s Place student programs now best suited for Grade 3 students
The curriculum outcomes for the 1881 Schoolhouse and Grandma's Place: A Visit to Grandma and Grandpa’s in the Past student programs now more closely align with the learning objectives for Alberta Education’s new Grade 3 social studies curriculum rather than Grade 4.
Therefore, effective for the 2025–26 school year, the target grade level for these particular field trips will shift from Grade 4 to Grade 3.
Archives and Museum deeply appreciates the past patronage of Grade 4 teachers and the valuable learning experiences you have provided students through these field trips. Your support has been significant.
Moving forward, Grade 4 teachers who have historically booked these trips should refer the Grade 3 teachers in their school to the 1881 Schoolhouse and Grandma's Place field trips. These experiences offer a rich and engaging way for students to connect with the Grade 3 social studies curriculum.
